As an interpretation of the O.E.epic, this film is massively impressive. It felt like a fairly free interpretation of the original without being in any way a travesty. The script was particularly intelligent, teasing out material that is implied in the original in an absorbing way.The use of the priest to suggest the ideological overlay of the Christian scribe, the references to the political chaos...(trimmed)

Outstanding film, the best telling of the oral history which brings myth to life in a realistic manner showing how oral storytelling transforms reality into mythic iconic expression. PS: Thank God for no computer animation. A must have on DVD

notbad at al. Having specialised in anglo-saxon archaeology since university I was approaching this film with some trepidation..I was happily surprised by the acting, script and costumes.OK it skips and adds here and there....nonetheless Thank you for not bringing out yet another "Hollywood-ised Inspired by the imagination" of the director film. nice movie, I wondered why the band Marillion wasn't mentioned in the credits for the music. The underlining musical theme througout the movie was very obviously inspired by their epic composition "Grendel" from 1980 / 1981

A great, epic film! Beautiful and impressive for such a small film that went through so many difficulties during production. Commendable for its lack of CGI, which I believe is holding hostage the art of film. Thank you for making such an entertaining movie!

I "fell in love" with old literature thanks to my 12th grade English Lit. teacher. Beowulf was the first piece of literature we read and discussed. This film truly captures the essence of that great epic poem. My thanks to the wonderful actors who brought this to the screen. Very respectfully yours, Ollie

I have to be honest, this was the dumbest movie I've ever purchased. The fruit loop that played Grendel, I mean please, I know he was a troll, but retarded as well huh? And I love the use of slang terms which came to be in the 1600's being used in conversations taking place(supposedly) in 500-600 AD...niiice. This movie was lame...someone owes me 12 bucks.

Why on earth would you want to portray Grendel in any way other than as a monster and not merely a tall bearded man with unkempt fingernails and a hunger for revenge? Surely Grendel's nature is more otherworldly and unnatural than that. In short, your Grendel is all too human.

It is as if either no one has read Tolkien's essay or, having read it, simply does not care. If you are aware that Grendel was a descendent of Cain, the first murderer (this description alone should suggest a myriad of grotesque images to the mind) why on earth would you want to portray him in any way other than as a monster and not merely a tall bearded man with unkempt fingernails and a taste fo...(trimmed)

Are you familiar with Tolkien's essay, "Beowulf: the Monsters and the Critics"? If so, why do you (apparently) try to humanize Grendel (to quote your trailer: "A son must avenge his father")? What is the matter with keeping him a monster (the mindless, amoral, cannibal he was described as being in the poem)? Or am I unreasonable? Why should I not let the un-literary (or anti-literary) interpret a...(trimmed)
